Programs Empower New Mexicans To Earn While They Learn As Part Of National Apprenticeship Week

ALBUQUERQUE — New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has issued a proclamation recognizing Nov. 14-20, 2022 as National Apprenticeship Week, commending the proven, industry-driven training model providing a critical talent pipeline that can train and build up our workforce.

The New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions (NMDWS) encourages employers to discover how Registered Apprenticeship programs help develop a skilled workforce pipeline while empowering apprentices to earn while they learn.

“As federal infrastructure funds begin to flow, the demand for apprenticeships will be increasing even more,” NMDWs Secretary Sarita Nair said. “Our department is getting ahead of this demand through partnerships with career technical education programs, community colleges, unions and businesses.”

National Apprenticeship Week recognizes leaders in business, labor, education, and trade industry partners, and highlights how apprenticeships prepare workers for the jobs in demand today and in the future. NMDWS can assist local employers and industry partners to develop new apprenticeship training programs and expand on current Registered Apprenticeship training programs for new occupations and underrepresented populations.

“Within the next five years, 70 percent of all jobs in the United States will require some training or education beyond high school, and apprenticeship programs are a valuable way to build connections with employers and earn while you learn,” Higher Education Secretary Stephanie M. Rodriguez said. “We support the development of diverse education-to-career pathways and commend the Department of Workforce Solutions, New Mexico’s community colleges, and all of the partners who are coming forward to support New Mexicans and our state’s economy through apprenticeship programs.”

NMDWS will be hosting an Apprenticeship Fair 1-4 p.m., Nov. 16, in Albuquerque at 401 Broadway NE. This is an opportunity for individuals to connect with current apprenticeship programs and start planning their future career.

New Mexico Workforce Connection center staff statewide are also available to engage with New Mexican job seekers and employers to help them explore apprenticeship training models and develop apprenticeship training programs that open opportunities to teach specific skills and retain employees right here in New Mexico.

Apprentices are empowered to be hands-on from day one, while also earning a paycheck and engaging in the workplace. The goal is to prepare individuals for skilled occupations while equipping them with the practical experience that employers seek in applicants. As a result, employers often ensure that program completers retain employment at an increased wage.

There are more than 45 Registered Apprenticeship programs across New Mexico with 1,827 apprentices participating in obtaining the skills they need to succeed while earning wages for financial security.
