The Los Alamos Historical Museum closed today through Oct. 21 for the move from the Guest Cottage to a temporary museum space in the teen center building on 20th Street adjacent to Ashley Pond Park.
Los Alamos County is upgrading the Los Alamos Ranch School Guest Cottage that currently houses the Historical Museum, improving electrical systems, plumbing, heating, cooling and creating more accessible entryways and pathways throughout the building.
“The renovation offers a unique opportunity for the Los Alamos Historical Society and Museum to redesign the exhibits in the Guest Cottage and expand the museum campus,” Museum Director Judith Stauber said. “This exhibit design project will update the guest cottage, create innovative outdoor experiences, and introduce new Cold War exhibits in the Hans Bethe House. Our beloved historic structures will retain their intimate feel while exhibit content is enhanced and methods to engage visitors are improved. Throughout the museum campus, multiple voices and perspectives will communicate the importance of Los Alamos history.”
Special events Oct. 19, 20 and 21 include a Pop Up Museum Shop 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Fuller Lodge and Historic District walking tours leaving twice daily at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. from the Guest Cottage.
The Historical Museum will reopen in the new temporary space Thursday, Oct. 22. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
