SANTA FE — House Bill 357, an important measure to support New Mexico law enforcement and enhance the safety of our communities, passed the House of Representatives Tuesday with a vote of 64-0.
The bill would help recruit and retain municipal and county law enforcement officers across New Mexico, through raises, recruiting initiatives, hiring bonuses, relocation expenses for new employees, and professional development programs, including training in community policing.
“One important step we can take to make our communities safer immediately is to provide our law enforcement agencies with the resources they need to recruit and retain quality officers and staff,” said lead sponsor Rep. Meredith Dixon (D-Albuquerque). “House Bill 357 will help incentivize experienced officers to stay on the force, grow our departments from within, and recruit new talent to protect and serve the people of New Mexico.”
The bill is sponsored by Rep. Dixon, Minority Leader Ryan Lane (R-Aztec), and Reps. Day Hochman-Vigil (D-Albuquerque), Gail Armstong (R-Magdalena) and Joy Garratt (D-Albuquerque). It also includes support for public attorneys and correctional officers to ensure adequate staffing across New Mexico’s criminal justice system. Funding for HB 357 is included in the House Budget.
HB 357 is part of the House Democrats’ slate of bills to comprehensively address community safety across New Mexico. It will now advance to the Senate.
