How To Submit A Nomination For The Public Safety Officer Medal Of Valor

Review answers to frequently asked questions to help you prepare a compelling nomination for the Medal of Valor—one of the nation’s highest awards for valor by a public safety officer. 

Who’s eligible to be nominated?  

  • Public safety officers as determined by the U.S. Attorney General, which means people (living or deceased) who at the time of the event, served a public agency, with or without compensation, as firefighters; law enforcement officers, including a corrections, court, or civil defense officers; or emergency services officers.  
  • Candidates who have exhibited extraordinary valor above and beyond the call of duty.  
  • Individuals and teams can be nominated.  
  • The event occurred during the period of June 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025. 

Who can nominate?  

  • Nominations must be submitted or approved by the chief executive officer of the public safety agency that the nominee serves or served.  

Each nomination must be submitted through the online nomination system. The nomination period closes at 5 p.m. ET, Oct. 3.
