ALBUQUERQUE — The newly founded Jack Beaty Educational Scholarship Foundation will provide scholarships to help New Mexico students pay for tuition.
An applicant must be a New Mexico resident, a high school senior, a high school graduate or have a GED equivalent with plans to enroll in an accredited two- or four-year college, university, vocational training center or polytechnic/trade school in the fall 2023 semester.
The deadline to apply is Nov. 1 and recipients will be notified in March 2023.
Carrying out the final wishes of long-time New Mexico businessman and political leader Jack Beaty, Beaty’s estate will provide funding for the ongoing scholarship program. A pillar of the community, Beaty loved New Mexico and founded two companies supplying food to retail companies throughout the state.
In addition to his business ventures, he was involved in New Mexico politics, serving as Bernalillo County Democratic Chairman and New Mexico State Democratic Chairman, where he became close friends with both John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy. Beaty served as the Western States Coordinator for JFK’s presidential campaign and subsequently in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations.
Later, he established the public relations firm Jack Beaty and Associates in Washington, D.C. He also managed Western Minerals and Oil, an oil and gas company, until his retirement.
In 1973, Beaty married Rose Marie Martinez. The couple moved back to New Mexico and devoted their time to increasing access to education for the less fortunate.
“Jack Beaty was an integral part of New Mexico, and was passionate about helping those less fortunate,” said Kurt Sommer, Trustee of the Jack Beaty Educational Scholarship Foundation. “We are honored to carry out his wishes, honor his legacy and provide funding for New Mexico’s young people to fulfill their dreams. We hope this scholarship funding will go a long way to helping students achieve future success.”
