KIWANIS News:

Two Kiwanis scholarship recipients spoke during the June 7 Kiwanis meeting.

Dennis Gill, chairman of the Scholarship Committee introduced each one.

Adalee Witt, who earned the Jeannette O. Wallace award spoke first. She had read multiple articles about Wallace’s good work for the county and in the Legislature and said she hoped to attain the same level of public service.

She is a former president of the Eco Club, and she was a member of Key Club for four years before graduating from Los Alamos High School. She plans to attend Oregon State University and will major in ecology and biology.

Nina Johnson was the next speaker. She was chosen this year as a “Kiwanis Scholar”

Her public service activities started early. She was on the Council at the Teen Center when she was in the ninth grade. Later she joined the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board as a student liaison. During her junior year, she served on the Los Alamos Public Schools Board, providing a student voice on issues as important as coronavirus. She will be attending the University of California Santa Barbara in the fall and wants to become a medical doctor.
