Los Alamos High School’s football team will kick off its home season Thursday night, taking on an old foe at Sullivan Field.
The Hilltoppers will meet the Taos Tigers Thursday. Kickoff at Sullivan Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Hilltoppers opened their 2025 campaign with a monster victory on the road Saturday. The Hilltoppers crushed the homestanding Espanola Valley Sundevils 54-6, avenging a season-opening loss from one year ago.
Los Alamos (1-0) scored 21 points in the opening half, then matched that point total in the fourth quarter to rout the Sundevils (0-1). It was one of the biggest opening day wins in Hilltopper history.
Running back Jordan Herrera ripped through the Sundevils Saturday, scoring five touchdowns in the win.
Thursday’s opponent, Taos, will be looking to bounce back from a rough first week outing. Taos never got much going on the offensive end and was blanked in Santa Fe by the St. Michael’s Horsemen, 26-0.
The Tigers (0-1) were actually very much in last week’s contest for most of the way, trailing by just two scores heading into the fourth quarter, but a huge fourth-down conversion in the final quarter by the Horsemen led to another score and effectively put that contest away.
This contest might be a tougher test for Los Alamos than in week one. Not only are the Tigers higher rated in Class 4A than are the Sundevils, but Los Alamos will be facing the Tigers on a shorter-than-expected week.
Los Alamos’ game with Espanola Valley was scheduled for last Friday night, but a huge thunderstorm blew in, settling directly over the football field, just minutes before the scheduled kickoff. After a 90-minute delay, the game was officially postponed until Saturday morning.
Thursday’s game will be the first of two consecutive Thursday home games for Los Alamos. Los Alamos will face Pojoaque Valley Sept. 4.
