In an effort to support students and families during the 2020-21 school year, La Vista Church of the Nazarene has opened the White Rock Learning Center.

The WRLC exists to support the elementary school age children of essential workers in completing their online schoolwork and providing supervised recreation time while their parents are at work.

The WRLC is completely volunteer run, and is providing this service free of charge to parents. 

Students at the WRLC follow their schedules provided by their public school teachers, including “in-class” time on video conferences and academic time to do their homework. During breaks and other un-scheduled time, students play outdoors, read, play educational games, and engage in art and movement lessons.

The WRLC follows COVID-Safe practices, including wearing face masks, social distancing, washing hands often and sanitizing shared surfaces. 

In order to serve as many families as possible, the White Rock Learning Center needs volunteers.  Volunteers supervise children in shifts 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Shifts are from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers can choose to take only one shift a week or up to 10. Even 1 shift filled is a huge help.

Children are in grades kindergarten through 6th, and complete their schooling online; no teaching experience is required, though volunteers must be able to pass a criminal background check and must be able to gently direct and discipline young children.

Volunteers are needed particularly 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursdays and 12:30-3:30 p.m. Mondays, though volunteers are needed any day or time. To volunteering or for questions about the learning center, contact learningcenter@lavistanaz.org or call 505.500.4313.
