From the Laura M. Montoya Campaign:
Dolores Huerta, an American labor leader and civil rights activist, originally from Dawson, N.M., has endorsed Laura M. Montoya, the democratic nominee for New Mexico State Treasurer.
“I met Laura in Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1995 when she was a MEChA student. I have watched Laura grow as a compassionate and effective leader. Laura’s experience makes her the most qualified and prepared to be the first female State Treasurer in New Mexico and the first Latina in our country’s history. Si Se Puede!!,” Dolores Huerta said.
“It is an honor to be endorsed by Doña Dolores, a legendary community leader who is from New Mexico and has dedicated her entire life to serving the people. I was inspired by her in 1995 and thankful that I now have an opportunity to impact New Mexicans and be the representation that we deserve,” Montoya said.
Montoya was the only state-wide candidate in a contested primary that earned the endorsement of both the Albuquerque Journal and Santa Fe New Mexican. Montoya was the two-term Sandoval County Treasurer with more than 20 years of government experience. Early voting has begun. The election is Nov. 8, 2022.
As the two-term Sandoval County Treasurer, Montoya represented Sandoval County and New Mexico at the state and national levels, including the National Association of Counties. She was the only New Mexico County official appointed to vice chairmanship, serving under eight NACo presidents. Montoya served as vice chair for the Finance, Pension, and Intergovernmental Affairs (FPIGA) Committee, chair of the Young Elected Officials network called NextGen, and member of the Women of NACo. She was a member of the New Mexico Tax Policy Committee and the Treasurer’s Affiliate Legislative chairwoman.
