LAPS News:
Los Alamos High School students in the Stagecraft and Theatrical Building Trades class, in collaboration with Los Alamos County and the Los Alamos Police Department, have been busy building new props for this year’s Safety Town. Safety Town is a weeklong program for incoming kindergarten students to learn about important safety skills.
This year’s group of students will pedal past a new police station, fire station and Century Bank buildings. The buildings are set up on the playground along with stop lights and stop signs to teach students about bicycle safety. Creation of the new buildings began just a few weeks ago.
Safety Town is sponsored by Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS), Los Alamos County, and the Los Alamos Police Department. More than 900 children have attended Safety Town since the program was started in 2015 by Chief Dino Sgambellone.
“We appreciate this collaboration between our building trades students and the police department in updating the buildings, lights, and signs for Safety Town,” Superintendent Jennifer Guy said. “The students did a great job, and the younger students will be excited to see them at Safety Town on the first day.”
“We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with Los Alamos Public Schools,” Chief Sgambellone added. “The students’ impressive work on these new buildings ensures that Safety Town—one of our most beloved programs—will ‘thrive for years to come’.”
More than 100 incoming kindergarten students are registered for Safety Town, which will be held this year from June 1 through June 5 at Barranca Mesa Elementary School.
