LAPS News:
Los Alamos Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kurt Steinhaus sent the following letter to LAPS staff and administrators this morning regarding the death overnight of beloved teacher Joy Handsberry who lost her battle with cancer:
Warm Memories of Joy Handsberry, Teacher and Friend
It is with a heavy heart that I ask for a moment of silence to remember our dear colleague Joy Handsberry. Surrounded by family and friends, Joy passed away last night.
During a brief time in hospice this week, she found comfort from those closest to her. This coming week will likely be filled with sharing stories about a wonderful teacher loved by her students and fellow staff members.
For those who did not know Joy, you may want to find time to learn about her magnificent life. Joy was revered by everyone she knew. I have especially fond memories of her larger than life personality that was contagious and inspiring.
There are many wonderful ways to remember Joy and her impact on our students and the whole education community. On Monday at lunch, the high school staff plan to wear pink and take pictures standing on one leg like Joy’s favorite lawn ornament – the pink flamingo. Another group is planning a float in the light parade called “Ode to Joy.”
Information about arrangements for Joy will be shared, when available. Let’s all remember to take care of ourselves. Please feel free to contact me if you want to talk.
Sincerely,
Kurt
