How do we foster brain development and create safe and healthy environments for children to thrive?

Dr. Bruce Perry, a nationally known psychiatrist who has served as a consultant in the Columbine school shootings and other traumatic events, will present on “The Power of Early Childhood” at the annual First Born® Conference 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Sept. 23 at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort at Santa Ana Pueblo.

Perry is Senior Fellow of the ChildTrauma Academy in Houston, Texas and an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Ill. He also is the author, along with Maia Szalavitz, of “The Boy Who Was Raised As a Dog: What Traumatized Children Can Teach Us About Loss, Love and Healing.”

Sponsored by the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation, it is the fifth convening to broaden the knowledge of First Born staff and other early childhood providers statewide. First Born is a home visitation program for women in their first pregnancy, first-time families and their newborns.

The conference is designed for early childhood providers and others interested in improving child and family health outcomes, school readiness, success and life-long learning.

A $125 registration fee includes continental breakfast, lunch and materials and is available online at www.lanlfoundation.org. Participants qualify for the conference rate at the resort. Sept. 12 is the deadline for registration.
