National Security: LANL’s Next-gen thought leaders take their learning to Washington

A cohort of Los Alamos National Laboratory’s next generation of innovative thought leaders recently traveled to Washington, D.C., for an immersive visit that included meeting with Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and NNSA Administrator Jill Hruby. Participants are part of the Laboratory’s MEDAL program (Mid-/Early-career Deter-detect-prevent Advanced Leadership), which exposes participants to the intersection of technology and policy as they relate to the Lab’s core missions of nuclear deterrence and countering global threats of nuclear proliferation and terrorism. Science: Grid (un)locked: Carbon-neutral future depends on updating how we make, move and store electricity

Achieving this carbon-neutral future requires big changes to the grid, both in its design and overall capacity, storage and reserves as we use more electricity for everything from cars to home heating,’ Mary Ewers said, an energy and economics researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory who has studied the grid for over a decade. ‘Achieving that future also depends on science to inform the public and decision makers about the options, so they support and make the best choices at all levels, from community to state to region.’ Read full article here. Operations: Northern New Mexico Integrated Security LLC awarded five-year subcontract to provide protective services at Los Alamos

Northern New Mexico Integrated Security LLC (N2MIS) was recently awarded a five-year contract to provide security services to Triad LLC, which operates Los Alamos National Laboratory on behalf of the National Nuclear Security Administration, an agency within the Department of Energy. N2MIS is a joint venture between the incumbent, Centerra Group LLC and Tsay Construction and Services LLC, which is a member of the Triad Pueblo Business Alliance. Read full article here.
