WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) announced today the award of a cooperative agreement that accelerates the dual objectives of eliminating the use of proliferation-sensitive highly enriched uranium (HEU) in the production of medical isotopes and establishing reliable domestic supplies of Molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) to meet U.S. patient needs.

Los Alamos scientists have advanced a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology that may provide a breakthrough for screening liquids at airport security. They’ve added low-power X-ray data to the mix, and as a result have unlocked a new detection technology. NNSA Removes High-Activity Radioactive Materials From Boston

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) recently successfully recovered a disused, high-activity cesium-137 source from Massachusetts General Hospital in downtown Boston, Mass. and transported it for permanent disposition. Formerly used as a research irradiator for medical studies, the device contained cesium-137, which could be used in a dirty bomb. The removal was part of NNSA’s global campaign to prevent terrorists from acquiring nuclear and radiological material.

Los Alamos Public Schools, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Los Alamos County are operating as usual today with no delays announced.
LAPS makes the decision to close school or delay the start of school, by 5:30 a.m. in order to notify bus drivers, school employees, and parents in a timely manner. Such announcements are made via the media of television, radio and websites.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representatives from the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), U.K.’s Ministry of Defence (MoD), and Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation “Rosatom” met Nov. 5-6 in Lisbon, Portugal, for the Eighth Nuclear Security Best Practices Exchange.
