Back in the fall, the construction site at Barranca Elementary School was filled with piles of dirt.

Since then, progress on the project at 57 Loma Del Escolar has been moving full steam ahead, with the addition of steel beams and concrete flooring. The end result will be a new two-story classroom building for first through sixth grades, as well as a cafeteria and administrative offices.

“We are very pleased with the progress so far,” LAPS Project Manager Herb McLean said. “It is amazing to see the changes from week to week, and even day to day.”

A few weeks ago, staff at Barranca were invited to sign the final beam before it was raised into place. Since then, crews poured the second section of the second floor and put in the stairway on the west end of the building. The addition of roof trusses and galvanized studs have made the classroom spaces more visible.

The new building is slated to be complete in July; renovations of the 100 and 200 wings will begin at that time, including the gym and preschool classrooms.
