LAPS News:
Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) welcomed students back to school this week for the start of the 2025-2026 school year. In White Rock, elementary students stepped into new school buildings.
“We are so excited to welcome students into our new buildings,” Superintendent Jennifer Guy said. “Both schools are amazing. We are extremely grateful to the taxpayers and county for their support of our schools, students, families and staff.”
The school hours adopted last year remain unchanged:
- Elementary schools start at 8:10 a.m.;
- High school starts at 8:30 a.m.; and
- Middle school starts at 8:40 a.m.
School leadership teams have stayed in place, with the exception of Stan Maschal, who assumed the role of Los Alamos High School (LAHS) Assistant Principal. Eric Ziegler is the new principal at LAHS.
LAPS spent the summer months hiring more than 75 new staff members, including teachers, educational assistants and substitutes. However, the district is experiencing a critical shortage of bus drivers. During the meeting on Tuesday, school board members approved an increase in the pay schedule for bus drivers in the hope that the higher hourly wage would encourage drivers to join LAPS. Anyone interested in working for LAPS is encouraged to go to www.laschools.net for more information and to check out job openings.
Families are reminded that school sites will be hosting Open Houses at 5:30 p.m., starting Tuesday, Aug. 19:
- Tuesday, Aug. 19: Mountain Elementary School
- Wednesday, Aug. 20: Aspen Elementary School
- Thursday, Aug. 21: Los Alamos Middle School
- Tuesday, Aug. 26: Barranca Mesa Elementary School
- Wednesday, Aug. 27: Los Alamos High School
- Thursday, Sept. 4: Pinon Elementary School
- Wednesday, Sept. 10: Chamisa Elementary School
