LARSO Announces Troubling Move By State For Seniors

By BERNADETTE LAURITZEN
Executive Director
LARSO

An open letter to the community.

On Monday, the Aging and Long-Term Services Department and Area Agency on Aging informed senior centers across the state that there would be an end to Grab and Go or Drive Thru lunches. The date for this has been determined for April 14.

I am dismayed that we didn’t have notification before a newsletter was sent out or the time to ease people off the system and find additional resources in advance.

I understand the senior socializing is important, but everyone isn’t lucky enough that they can do it. It is also required that all paperwork be done on the senior center premises or an employee must go to their home. Have I mentioned the world is short staffed at the moment?

We have increased what used to be 3 senior meal routes to 5 routes in the pandemic. While the whole world is ready for the pandemic to be over, there are many people that have an illness that causes them not to gather in large settings. While of course they are welcome to wear a mask, it is hard to wear a mask and eat at the same time.

Having no hope for a change, I am asking that community members consider donating low sodium soups, lower sugar cereals, oatmeal, juices, shelf stable milk and other easy to prepare items. We also welcome small donations to either senior center so we may purchase needed items for our senior pantries, located at each center. We have many people that struggle and without a free meal, that could hurt so many. You also know how hard it is for many people and especially seniors to ask for help.

I also ask that you contact the Aging and Long-Term Services Department to file a complaint. The number is 1-800-432-2080. You can also email Denise.King@state.nm.us.

While this may not affect you, there are many people across the state that need this service even though they are not frail enough to qualify for the Home Delivered Meals.

The Grab & Go option offers our nation’s elders a safer, healthier alternative that many fast food restaurants don’t offer, or not at no or low prices. If you are 60 and older ask about the free services available from your local senior center.

Thank you for your time.
