Our Brain contains two crucial types of support cells called astrocytes and microglia. The microglia are a type of immune cell which can be thought of as the garbage collector and of our brain’s communication highway or neurons.
Astrocytes on the other hand, are the brain’s construction crew responsible for providing neurons with the building blocks needed for growth. Most importantly, both of these cell types act as security guards, protecting our neurons from damage.Research indicates that both of these cell types are involved in the development of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and dementia.
We also know that diet has a big impact on how well these cells work. Why? Refined sugar (primarily white flour, white sugar and high fructose corn syrup) and excessive saturated fat consumption (primarily red meat, fried foods and dairy products) are seen as toxins by astrocytes and microglia. Astrocytes respond to sugar and saturated fat intake by surrounding our neurons whereas the microglia increase production of inflammatory chemicals.
When these cells are occupied with protecting, they aren’t able to effectively grow new neuronal connections or clean up the waste byproducts of regular brain metabolism. If a poor-quality diet is regularly consumed over a period of time, the ability to learn and store memories is impaired.
What does this all mean?
Optimal brain function is dependent on what you eat and being at your best means paying attention to what is on your plate. Besides putting us at risk for long term cognitive decline, the implications of this research for school age children is astounding. Having access to healthy foods for breakfast and lunch makes a difference in their ability to learn and memorize new things. Research tells us genetics plays a role in how severely affected these cells are when exposed to perceived toxins. Type 2 diabetes, most often caused by obesity and lifestyle, also plays a significant role in how these cells function.
Predisposition is important but all of us are affected by poor quality food at the end of the day. One of my favorite analogy’s is…how would you protect your asset if you bought your dream car? Premium fuel, regular maintenance, washing and waxing no doubt. Our average lifespan is roughly 80 years. Maintenance and quality matters even more when it’s the vehicle we live in for a lifetime.
