Leonard: Lost Purpose? 4 Things To Put You Back On Track

The Pew Research Center surveyed a large group of American adults on topics related to satisfaction with their lives.

The survey identified four things that were universally chosen by participants as purpose and satisfaction drivers in their lives.

Average life satisfaction was ranked on a scale of 1-10 with the following having top scores across the board:

  1. Good Health 7.3
  2. Spouse/Partner 7.2
  3. Career 7.1
  4. Friends 7.1

This is no surprise, as we know from research what people who have lived to 100 or older (centenarians) have in common. Longevity is linked to both satisfaction and an optimistic outlook on life. What specifically creates optimism, satisfaction and purpose? Relationships with others and healthy living are crucial. Healthy choices include being active, enjoying the outdoors, eating well and not avoiding but being moderate in our indulgences.

In addition, a positive outlook or optimistic attitude also affects our overall health. Relationships include being in a committed intimate relationship but also having friends, family and being involved in group activities with others. In my opinion, career should be expanded into contributions. Being involved in something that makes us feel like we are part of a greater cause whether in our career or outside of it is critical. If career choice hasn’t been satisfying: raising children, hobbies and volunteering can fill the void.

A TEDx talk by Dr. Riley Moynes on the stages of retirement recently enlightened me on post career satisfaction and life satisfaction in general.  Dr. Moynes interviewed hundreds of retirees and discovered that after the initial honeymoon phase, disillusionment begins to creep in. Long-term satisfaction in retirement requires finding purpose in contributing to a greater cause. This realization led him to create a local organization tasked to match up retirees with younger people in need of tutoring, mentoring, specific skills etc.

There you have it, the simple formula to living a life on purpose. Our relationships, our health and being part of something bigger results in a better life. If you are unsatisfied or feeling lost … look at where you are at in these four areas. Are you prioritizing these equally? Think about what it would take to find balance and work towards that.

Dr. Leonard’s practice focuses on posture and performance using a combination of soft tissue release, adjustments and exercise recommendations. She also coaches patients on nutrition, self-care and body awareness so they can manage themselves in between visits. Los Alamos Chiropractic Center is in the Mary Deal Building on Trinity Drive.
