Letter To The Editor: A Vote For David Reagor Is A Vote For Small Businesses

In a wealthy and highly educated town like ours, it is gravely disappointing that we don’t have a robust small business community essential for the quality of life. People would spend money here if they had choices for shopping and dining. Instead, we have a record number of business closures, empty storefronts, and fewer choices than we had 4 years ago. Look at all the businesses we have lost! Many entrepreneurs would not take the risk of opening a business here and go through the nightmare of dealing with Los Alamos County.

With Columbus Capital’s purchase of the old Smith’s and Mari Mac Center, its redevelopment could be the final nail in the coffin for our local entrepreneurs. 800 Trinity has a nail salon, hairdresser, 2 optometrists, and a church that may not be able to afford moving and relocation costs, higher rent in a newer space, and the loss of a valuable property asset. Further, there will be fewer opportunities than ever for local ownership, which is important to the long-term success, stability, and viability of small business owners. Recall that we lost our beloved Fleur De Lys due to a terminated lease and the inability to purchase space. I heard that this restaurant was welcomed and is now a thriving business in Santa Fe. We need County Councilors who will be consistent advocates for local interests and fierce defenders for those vested in our community.

There was a time, years ago, when Los Alamos was Mayberry. People listened to and cared about each other. Now, we have destroyed small town values and eroded into a cold, corporate entity.

We must re-elect Councilor David Reagor to be our advocate and our voice. A vote for David Reagor is a vote for integrity, accountability, and transparency. A vote for David Reagor is a vote for our small business community.
