Mark Twain is quoted as saying: Lies, damned lies and statistics! Some of our NM political figures are trying hard to replace the last with ‘politics’.
Rep. James Townsend complains that the “rocket docket” bills are not being sufficiently vetted by committees and more reviews are required. Yet these bills were passed by substantial bipartisan majorities before being vetoed by the previous Governor.
So the complaint is window-dressing (to use a polite term) to make it appear that Republicans are doing something to protect New Mexicans when actually they are just paying a price for their subservience to party politics, having failed to do their duty to the voters when they had the chance, by over-riding the vetoes.
Tom Wright makes a more astonishing claim: When it comes to election of the President, every square mile of US territory should have an equal vote. He puts it less directly, as: Why should 319 square miles of New York City out-vote 127,697 square miles of New Mexico? As if a factor of about 10 in population is of no consequence; as if one person, one vote is not an American principle. This is poppycock that bears no real relation to states’ rights. We should be insulted that he tries to make such a ridiculous argument…
