By JOAN AHLERS, Chief Operations OfficerBarranca Principal Gina Terrazas and the Steering Committee would like to correct some misinformation that was published in a Letter to the Editor from “Concerned Residents of Barranca Mesa” regarding the Barranca Elementary School pre-design planning.
School construction begins with a process called Educational Specifications (Ed Specs). This process looks at the programmatic functions of a school. During this process every single staff member is interviewed, from principal to custodian, then a Steering Committee is formed consisting of site staff, parents, district staff, PSFA and the consultants hired to complete the process. Barranca Ed Specs are being conducted by Architectural Research Consultants (ARC). ARC is the same firm who conducted Ed Specs for the high school, the middle school and Aspen school projects.
The Steering Committee has been meeting for the past three months and has generated educational concepts for the use of Barranca. ARC generated four concepts. The Steering Committee’s goal was to narrow that down to two. Those two would become part of the final Ed Spec document that would be provided to the winning bidder for architectural design. Below I have included the two conceptual ideas that will be advanced forward. Neither of them call for southern access onto Barranca Road.
You are encouraged to attend our community meeting at 5 p.m., March 22, in the Barranca School Gymnasium. This construction project will impact the entire neighborhood and LAPS wants to ensure that the public has a forum to voice concerns, ask questions and get the correct information.
