This is a response to Ms. Paige Knight’s recent article in the Post where she told us how progressive and equitable our NM Tax system is.
A mainstay of the NM taxing system is the Gross Receipts Tax. This is an inherently regressive tax, not a progressive one. As I pointed out in a previous letter (link), it is also inequitable in that it discriminates against New Mexico businesses in favor of out of state businesses (as I explained in a previous letter).
My question to Ms. Knight is how can you call yourself a progressive when you apparently think this type of taxation is just fine? I would also like to know if our local State Legislators are going to try to do anything about fixing it.
