Letter to the Editor: Search Exponentially

Los Alamos

Maybe, like me, you figured the unlikely phrase “live exponentially” sprang forth from a creative frenzy at the company hired to brand Los Alamos.

Not so.

A simple web search tells us it’s been floating around for years. Try it! But remember to put quotes around the phrase or you’ll probably get an Ebola story first.

Apparently it started blossoming about six years ago, usually as part of a longer predicate such as “live exponentially longer” or “live exponentially healthier” where “exponentially” is a synonym for “much” or “a lot.” Possibly “bunches and bunches” captures the feeling best.

Then, somewhere around four years ago, the more cryptic current form starts to appear, sweeping through the ranks of motivational writers and speakers of all stripes. You can find seminars with “Live Exponentially” as the title, and plenty of tracts where it means everything from “make more money” to “live religious” to “new age crystal happy”.

From there it sent tendrils to a much broader base, including real estate ads, a magazine article on talking dirty, and even a cross dressing performance video.

Clearly, it has broken out into the wild!

The final proof, as always, it the availability of T-shirts. Unfortunately, the two I saw were not useful for Los Alamos. The first shows a seascape, and the second has the added tagline “Parent Twins”.*
Give it a shot! It’s fun. And remember the old saying: you are known by the company you keep.

* This would, of course, be an exponent of 1.
