Letter to the Editor: Support Much Appreciated For ‘Drive For Matches’ Golf Tournament

By DAWN BROWN
Los Alamos/Rio Regional Director

To Our Wonderful Communities,

On behalf of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Los Alamos/Rio Arriba Regional Board, I would like to thank our communities for the unending and incredible support of our 3rd Annual Drive for Matches Golf Tournament.

The tournament was held July 26 at the Los Alamos Golf Course with a record 97 golfers in attendance.

A special thank you goes out to our community members, volunteers, Big’s & Little’s, businesses and organizations that helped to make this tournament the success that it was.

More than $16,000 was raised through sponsorships, donations and golfer fees, making this the largest Drive for Matches fundraiser to date. The monies raised from our tournament will be put to good use supporting our 83 matches in Rio Arriba and Los Alamos Counties, as well as, many soon to be matches. We will now be able to extend one-to-one mentorship support to more than 100 youth in Los Alamos and Rio Arriba Counties through our Community Based program and seven elementary school Lunch Buddy programs.

Our tournament sponsors were truly the ones who helped this tournament to be such a success.

Thank you to our sponsors: Title Guaranty, Kelly Myers of ReMax Realty, The Santa Claran Hotel & Casino, Del Norte Credit Union, Plateau Property Management, Bro’s Construction LLC., The Tsay Corporation, Rebound Therapy of Los Alamos, KRSN AM 1490 and Flowers by Gillian, Junction Restaurant of Santa Fe, Southwestern Title, El Paragua/El Parasol, Dr. Redman, Jemez Mountains Electric Cooperative, Macias, Gutierrez & Co., P.C., Henry Valencia Chevrolet and Desert Sun Motors.

Also, thank you to our awards and prize donors: Los Alamos Starbucks, R&M Construction, Los Alamos National Bank, Just for Grins, Valley National Bank, Henry Valencia Chevrolet, Flowers by Gillian, Title Guaranty, Art Brown, Kelly Myers, Dr. Cedric Page, Stephanie Brown, Melba Lee, Ken and Sue Koch, BBBS-NNM, Kenna Chavarria, BBBS-LARA, Ohkay Owingeh Hotel & Casino and Myron Koop with Parsons Brinckerhoff.

In closing we would like to recognize one of our own, Big Brother Donnie Torres, of the Los Alamos Golf Course. Donnie’s support of our board, his dedication to the Golf Course, our tournament and our youth was truly a gift from the heart. Donnie and the Los Alamos Golf Course staff ensured every detail was in order, down to the shine on the golf carts. It was clearly the staff’s goal to ensure every golfer was part of a tournament to be remembered. The support that the LAGC Staff and Donnie Torres give to our communities through dozens of golf tournament fundraisers every year, goes above and beyond the normal work day, we are grateful and in awe of all they do.

This year’s golf tournament saw scores of families golfing together, fathers with sons, mothers with daughters, Big’s with their Little’s and grandparents with their children and grandchildren. This tournament was a perfect representation of what Big Brothers Big Sisters is, as this was truly a family event.

Thank you again to our Los Alamos and Rio Arriba Communities for your loyal and dedicated support of the youth who need our services the most.
