Letter to the Editor: Taglines

By JOEL WILLIAMS
Los Alamos

While thinking of some taglines, I decided to look on the web for “popular” ones. One website lists more than 1,300 of them, which I have cleared the extraneous verbiage and hype and culled out 258 of the ones more familiar to me and posted them in a downloadable eXcel file at www.swcp.com/~jmw-mcw/258_taglines.xls.

Virginia is for Lovers is among them as you would guess. I did not find any “exponentials” among them. Many are very familiar as the result of lots of advertising $$$$$$$ spent in getting them out to you. Some are catchy, some less so and tied more to the company and its products.

Here is a sampling:

Emacs!

Not among them is a tagline that the South Dakota Department of Public Safety tries to lay on its citizens:

S.D. to pull ‘highway safety’ campaign … see details here.

Hope the readers start to get some ideas for tiny Los Alamos. How do we want to be “tagged”?
