COUNTY News:
The staff at Mesa Public Library, in partnership with the Los Alamos Arts Council (LAAC), will present three programs Dec. 8 and 9 by scientist, author and musician Peter Pesic.
The community is invited to join LAAC and Mesa Public Library for two lunchtime concerts at Fuller Lodge in which Pesic will perform Gabriel Fauré’s Complete Nocturnes for Piano:
- Nocturnes 1-6, noon-1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8; and
- Nocturnes 7-13 Friday, Dec. 9.
Fauré is one of the most beloved of twentieth-century composers, yet many of his compositions are rarely heard. His thirteen nocturnes for piano span the whole of his creative life, from early romanticism to a more modern style as he lost his hearing and faced the tragedies of the First World War. Rarely heard in concert, the whole set forms a self-portrait of a great composer.
Also join LAAC and Mesa Public Library 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8 for an author talk by Pesic in which he will discuss his latest book, Sounding Bodies, Music and the Making of Biomedical Science (MIT Press). This work follows Pesic’s Music and the Making of Modern Science and Polyphonic Minds to complete a trilogy of books about the influence of music on the sciences. The talk will be followed by on-site book sales and a signing. Anyone interested in attending may do so via livestream or in person at Fuller Lodge.
Pesic was educated at Harvard and Stanford, where he received a doctorate in physics. He is director of the Science Institute at St. John’s College, as well as Musician-in-Residence and Tutor Emeritus. He also is an Associate Professor at Harvard’s Department of Physics.
