Española Mayor John Ramon Vigil

The Los Alamos Public Library will host an evening of discussion with Española Mayor John Ramon Vigil 6:30 p.m., Thursday at Mesa Public Library.

In honor of the 2024 National Hispanic Heritage Month theme “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,” Mayor Vigil will share with the audience his experiences as a leader and his hopes for the future of local communities.

Vigil has been a part of his community’s leadership since his early years. As the youngest person to serve on the Española City Council at age 22, and later elected Mayor at 26, Vigil has been a part of the evolving culture and heritage of young Hispanics in northern New Mexico. During the event, his fresh new ideas and perspectives will be discussed along with his positions in government while holding on to his heritage and cultural traditions.

One of Los Alamos’ closest neighboring towns, the City of Española is filled with a rich cultural heritage that incorporates elements of all the regional cultures in Northern New Mexico. The issues that are faced by the citizens and leadership of Española are often shared by those in our own community. The cultural heritage that has evolved Los Alamos County can look to the leadership and examples set by those in the  greater region to share in the solutions from which all benefit.

“This year, we wanted to view the heritage month through a regional lens and with specific focus on the cultural experience of younger generations,” Program specialist Aimee Doiron said. “Mayor Vigil exemplifies this focus, and we are so excited to host him for a chat about his vision and drive as one of the most prominent young Hispanic leaders in Northern NM.”
