Scenes From ‘Monastery Of Christ In The Desert’ In Abiquiu
View Sunday morning of the Monastery of Christ in the Desert in Abiquiu. A community of monks lives at this Benedictine monastery in the Chama Canyon wilderness, about 75 miles north of Santa Fe. According to its website, ‘The monks here have the goal of living the contemplative life, which St. Benedict, whose Rule is followed, envisions as a life free from all attachments so that a relationship with God becomes their central and even exclusive relationship. Such a life is modeled on the self-sacrificing love of Jesus Christ and empowered by a prayer life in the Holy Spirit as the monk spends his Read More

Fr. Glenn: Toughened By Trial
“My scars tell a story. They are a reminder of times that life tried to break me … but failed.”
This aphorism, which I encountered recently, is one that I think many, if not all, of us can relate to in some way, and is not unlike philosopher Frederich Nietzsche’s “What does not kill me makes me stronger.”
We are taught even as children that life will not be a bed of roses … that difficulties enter everyone’s life relative to his status and condition. Yet, as muscles are strengthened through resistance and not through ease, psychological strength and resilience results in overcoming Read More

What’s the best thing about this town? When someone who doesn’t live here asks you this question, what do you say? Some answers might include: our outdoorsy lifestyle; our unceasing, intellectual curiosity; our diversity of places of origin, from all over the country and around the world; our support of community arts. Our town is rich in so many ways!

Home Country: Here In The Rain
Home Country
By SLIM RANDLES
When the world is hot and my skin is fried, scratching from the constant dry, let the clouds boil up, boil up high. And then shade the earth with the darkening sky and bring the secrets and the smell of rain. The coolness and the blessed rain, again.
Our land is brown but blessed, stressed in the heat, the shiny heat of day.
The slender green of rivers slide along, striving to continue, to feed its own along the banks, the banks where the dust rises. Rises, powdery clomp by clomp as we walk, walk the shady way.
And though the heat, the dryness of heat, pushes down our weary feet, Read More
Pawlak: Buying Bridges Is So Passé
In days past, saying that someone was willing to buy the Brooklyn Bridge was a nice way of calling them a gullible person who would buy anything. Now, having seen the Brooklyn Bridge myself, I can tell you that at any price, it would be a lousy purchase!
But that was before the internet and online stores made it easy to buy things with the click of a button. The frantic buyer, eager to find anything to buy, can now find anything that can be imagined.
You don’t need six million dollars and a passion for duct-taped bananas to join the parade of mindless spending. Let’s start with something Read More

Fr. Glenn: Following The Path
Well, ‘tis Memorial Day weekend—a time to remember our honored dead who died in war and other service to our nation and its people … those who offered and gave all that they had to give. And whether one does or does not agree with the public policies that led to them being in harm’s way, it does not diminish the selflessness of these men and women’s service. One need only walk the gardens of stone of any national cemetery, imagining the heart-rending cry of surviving comrades and families whose tears water the grounds in which lay their brothers and sisters in arms and their loved ones. A few short weeks ago, my grandfather Ken went outside to take care of his annual task of prepping and displaying his large pots of red geraniums outside his home in Sabetha, KS. At his age, (99 ½) he was pushing boundaries of his energy and strength, and he didn’t “bounce back” after exerting himself with this beloved gardening activity as he usually would in a day or so.
