An Open Book: The Law Of Common Sense

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos

I don’t know if this is a common occurrence, but the relatively leisurely birth of our first son, led Terry and I to take an accordingly leisurely reaction when labor pains started for our second one. Although we lived a 40-minute drive from the hospital, the contractions were mild and irregular, so we went about our business with the confidence of experienced parents. However, Jacob suddenly decided that he had had enough in a cramped space, and off we were, flying down U.S. Route 3 in the middle of the night toward Boston Beth Israel Hospital. My wife’s breathing Read More

In recent years, concerns have grown around the country about the widespread health risks associated with our sedentary work lives. Two researchers from the Endocrine Research Unit of the Mayo Clinic looked into the question of “How Much Do We Really Sit?”

Writing in the journal Obesity in 2009, they expressed what may seem like an obvious fact: “Work days are associated with more sitting and less walking/standing time than leisure days.” One of many piece-meal studies

NMCCB Statement On Death Penalty Reinstatement

NMCCB News:

ALBUQUERQUE  We, the Catholic Bishops of New Mexico, find the decision by Governor Susana Martinez to place the reinstatement of the Death Penalty on the agenda of a special legislative session to be irresponsible.

The legislature spent a decade debating the issue, ending with a bipartisan vote that ended the practice of a state-sanctioned death penalty. This was a definitive decision and had ample discovery of evidence and debate. That decision should remain final.

The abomination of taking a life, the death penalty,

How The Hen House Turns: Whistles Work

How The Hen House Turns
By CARY NEEPER
Formerly of Los Alamos

There is an ongoing disagreement about birdfeeders—a balancing act between the joy that people have in watching the birds, and the birds’ need to know how to find wild food.

We have enjoyed the company of Los Alamos’s scrub jays over the years. One took peanuts from our hands, one fluffed on the porch rail when he saw us eating breakfast, one made it quite clear that he wanted his peanut on the porch rail, nowhere else.

This spring, when the squirrels took over our bird feeder,

We lean art against them and drill curtain rods into them, scuff them with chairs and sometimes ignore them completely.

When thoughtfully considered, these often overlooked features form the foundation of any decorating scheme and impart a finished look. Walls can dramatically transform a space, lending historical reference or sleek sophistication, eye-catching architectural detail or whimsical fun.

I’ve rounded up several inspiring treatments to help you think outside of the plain-white box and reinvent the walls that Read More

Pastor Granillo: Encouraged

Pastor Raul Granillo

Encouraged.

I remember being discouraged when I was a kid because we were “poor”. It didn’t help when my older brother would tell me about how great his life was back when him and mom lived in Chicago. He would brag about her great job and how his toys were so absolutely amazing. I would look at mine and think, “This is just not fair. I’ll never have what he had.”

As an adult, I think it’s still easy for me to look around at the world and think, “I am so far behind successful people that I could never catch up.” It can be discouraging for anyone when we compare our lives to Read More

Home Country: Happy Change Come September

By SLIM RANDLES
September.

Our month of change. Our month of happy change. Once more we can stand the thought of wearing a sweater as the summer sun burns itself down. Once again we can think about a new year at school, a new teacher. Once again, the house is ours … and quiet during the day.

September.

In the forest, the animals are polishing antlers, sleeking muscles for the mating ruts to come, marking their territories. The deciduous trees are showing those awesome changes of color as the mountains become a splendid quilt of temporary beauty.

September.

A resting time for the older folks. They can Read More
