By PASTOR GRANILLO
Los Alamos

We all know that every day, life happens. It happens in our homes, in our work, with our relationships, in our school, with our health, with everything that we know—life happens. And as life happens we are forced to make decisions that we know will impact the rest of how life happens.

How often have we made a decision just hoping we don’t mess things up worse than they already are? None of us want to make bad decisions, but all too often we do; and so we seek wisdom in various places, hoping to find the secret to good decision making.

Wisdom is how we think our knowledge should Read More

Staff Report

It can be difficult to find a way to fundraise and actually offer something that people need or want. La Vista Church is trying a new angle—ultrasonic blind cleaning.

Friends of the church have offered to bring their expertise and their ultrasonic machine to White Rock, for this weekend only, to clean blinds or golf clubs for a suggested donation that will be given to the La Vista Church.

The ultrasonic machine uses sound waves in water to clean blinds, golf clubs, and just about anything you Read More

Cherry Clafouti and Pickled Cherries

The sour cherry trees in our yard produced more cherries this year than they had in 17 years.

And although we are typically in fierce competition with birds to get them as they ripen, this year the birds seemed sated by other food sources and took only a modest share. I have also seen lots of cherries at the Farmer’s Market this year. This meant that I could make more than a few cherry crisps for the family, and considered other recipes. Read More

Verde Juice owner Kelly Egolf began juicing seriously by necessity. After an operation required her jaw to be wired shut for months.

Products available for a liquid diet were unappealing and she decided to get back into juicing. Soon she was juicing for 10 of her friends.

“Everyone kept asking me why I didn’t start a business,” Egolf said. “I thought, why not?”

Pastor Granillo: Fearless Love

By Pastor RAUL GRANILLO
Los Alamos

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to love fearlessly? By that, I mean to love without the fears of disappointment, betrayal, rejection, or anything else that could hinder or prevent love.

Being open to love is scary because we know that it makes us vulnerable. And we know that people are capable of hurting us if we don’t set up guards—guards that protect us from getting hurt by others, but that can also prevent us from reaching out.

I spend a week every year at a youth camp, helping teens work through the everyday issues of life. And it seems like every year teens Read More

The Value of Interior Design – Why Hire a Designer?
Smart Design With Suzette
By SUZETTE FOX

Lately I’ve been pondering how to communicate the value of interior design. Defining one’s personal value is more than what service we offer, of course, but it’s good to communicate a lifetime’s wealth of knowledge in order to help others.

One of the most common myths about working with an interior designer is that it will cost too much. While it is true that some designers command high fees, many charge rates that are quite reasonable and Read More

How The Hen House Turns: First Days Of Turkey One

How The Hen House Turns
By CAROLYN (CARY) NEEPER Ph.D.

The First Days Of Turkey One

It’s June 2-4, sometime in the mid-1970s. We called our surviving turkey poult Dee-dum, but the name didn’t stick. She (we hoped) was called Turkey. She is now known in this column as Turkey One.

The young fuzzball insisted on a cuddle every evening at dusk. The rocking chair worked for both of us. After one half-hour, she was sleepy enough to settle down with the chicken chicks on an old ski hat under a piece of pale green blanket. They all slept through the night, quietly, if the box was closed.

On June 5, daughter Read More

Faith & Science: Intelligent Design Theory Wednesday

Faith & Science:
Intelligent Design Theory

Everyone who accepts the Hebrew Scriptures as revealed truth believes in intelligent design of the universe and its inhabitants. But, what is this Intelligent Design (ID) Theory?

To its proponents, a few scientists and groups in the UK and US, it’s a scientific conclusion and method based on observations and logical deductions. To its detractors, including many scientists of faith and a Pennsylvania court, it’s not science and does not belong in science classrooms. This talk will explore these points of view and encourage each person to decide Read More
