Punxsutawney Phil of Los Alamos did not see his shadow this morning when emerging from his burrow in Quemazon (although clearly visible in the snow behind him), thus predicting an early spring. As the legend goes, if Phil sees his shadow, he expects six more weeks of winter weather and scurries back into his hole. While the small furry celebrity has been in the weather-prediction business for more than a century, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that Phil shows ‘no predictive skill’ in that his predictions have only been accurate some 40 percent of the time.
