Promotional Opportunities

Oppenheimer/ScienceFest Business Promotion
As we do for ScienceFest every year, we would like to promote your unique experiences, products, programming, or attractions. This year we will promote anything with an “Oppenheimer” twist! This can be as simple as a menu item, t-shirt design, or a one-time Oppie-themed Trivia Night, to an on-going tour or art program. But instead of just doing this for ScienceFest, we will promote these specials for a longer period of time. and then continue to build the offerings as this “Year of Oppenheimer” moves along. So, please send us your “Oppenheimer” offerings, with a photo if possible, to Sam at sam@losalamos.org. Contact us if you have questions!

SALA Event Center Advertising and Sponsorship Opportunities
SALA is offering 15, 30, and 60-second ad slots with limited spots available, which will allow businesses to reach a diverse and engaged audience. Pride Month Promotions
June is Pride month, a celebration of LGBTQ+ culture, achievements and activism, and the local organizers of Pride-related activities are reaching out to Los Alamos businesses to ask for a show of support. We invite those businesses that wish to show their support to complete the following sentence:

“I support Pride month because _____.”

Send your response to johngus@cybermesa.com  (John Gustafson). We will collect and package the responses and use them in our promotional outreach through local media — so, a free plug for your business and an inducement to potential customers! Thanks for your participation.

Los Alamos County

Bike to Work events this Wednesday, May 17
Los Alamos County Public Works Department, the Transportation Board, and Community Services Department invite the community to celebrate & “Bike to Work” events on Wednesday, May 17, 2023.
Bicyclists are invited to stop by the Energizer Station from 7:00 – 9:00 a.m. at the northwest corner of Diamond and Canyon for refreshments, snacks, and bike related swag.

The public is invited to SALA – Los Alamos Event Center Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Professional Mountain Bikers and YouTubers, Syd & Macky will share their video on replacing a car with e-bikes in Los Alamos. The Bicycle Working Group will share their plan to improve infrastructure in Los Alamos and Los Alamos County Public Works will have updates on their bicycle related projects (Urban Trail, Canyon Rim Trail, etc.).

According to the League of American Bicyclists, 40 percent of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles, making bicycling a feasible and fun way to get around. The County urges everyone to bike to work or try cycling for fun, fitness, or transportation.

Public Works staff offer the following tips to assist community members to better enjoy biking to work:
 Have your bike checked over by your local bike shop.
 Always wear a helmet to protect your head in the event of a crash.
 Ride in the right-most lane that goes in the direction that you are traveling.
 Obey all stop signs, traffic lights and lane markings.
 Look before you change lanes or signal a turn; indicate your intention, then act
 Always be visible and predictable and wear bright clothing.

Motorists are also reminded of the County’s “5 foot to Pass” ordinance pertaining to bikes. The ordinance states, “when approaching or passing any person riding on a bicycle, the operator of a motor vehicle shall proceed with caution and shall pass such bicycle rider at a reasonable speed and maintain a safe distance, no less than five feet, from the operator of the bicycle.”

Individuals with questions or comments about the May 17 events can call the Public Works Department at 505-662-8150 or send an email to lacpw@lacnm.us.

Kite Festival Returns
Kite Festival returns to Los Alamos County the weekend of May 19-21. Los Alamos Arts Council and Enterprise Bank and Trust are proud to bring Kite Festival back to our community after a multi-year hiatus due to Covid restrictions and last year’s fire emergency. This is the largest Kite Festival in New Mexico, bringing in hundreds of local families to build and decorate kites, learn about kite history and artistic design, watch demos and just have fun in the spring sun! We have three fabulous days for our Los Alamos County families and neighboring communities.

Festivities kick off Friday night with a private event at Fuller Lodge Art Center for Members, Sponsors and volunteers.

Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Kite building, demos, vendors, food! If your kiddo built a kite in one of our workshops or partner workshops, make sure to bring it! We have 300 FREE tee shirts for the first kiddos to bring us their kite or check-in and build a kite on site. Demonstrations from beloved Kite Artists from around the state will take place throughout the day and we have a lot of cool arts and crafts vendors as well. Don’t forget to stop by PEECs Kite Workshop; they will be demonstrating how to build compostable kites!

Manhattan Project Film Series Coming to SALA
The Manhattan Project remains one of the most intriguing and controversial events in modern history. It was a time when a group of brilliant scientists came together in Los Alamos and elsewhere to develop the world’s first atomic bomb. It was a time of secrecy and intense pressure, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Decades later, the story of the Manhattan Project is still being told and retold from different perspectives.

Witness the much-anticipated upcoming July release of Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer scheduled to play at SALA beginning in late July.  Leading up to that release, SALA’s’ Manhattan Project Film Series is a must-see for history buffs, science enthusiasts, people who appreciate great storytelling, and anyone interested in this pivotal moment in history.  Audiences will experience a variety of filmmaker perspectives from the last 75 years of films telling stories about the Manhattan Project.

Sponsored by Suzette Fox and Paula Glover, co-owners of New Mexico Real Estate Group – Los Alamos.  “Their sponsorship has made it possible for 100% of the proceeds from series ticket sales to go to four Los Alamos non-profit history organizations”, says Allan.

Says Suzette, “Paula and I loved the idea when we heard about it, and sponsoring a community event to benefit multiple local non-profits is a natural for us.  We both have deep roots in the community and its history.”  New Mexico Real Estate Group – Los Alamos is a locally owned, full-service real estate company with offices located in the Small Business Center.

Beneficiary organizations are the Los Alamos Historical Society, the J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee, Friends of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park, and the Bradbury Science Museum Association.  “All of our organizations are so appreciative to New Mexico Real Estate Group – Los Alamos for their sponsorship and to SALA for organizing and hosting the series,” says Leslie Linke of the Historical Society. “It is a great example of a couple of local businesses figuring out how to support non-profits in our community.”

Series passes are available from the four organizations and 100% of the proceeds from their sales stays with the organization you purchase from. Series passes for admission to all films are $70. 100 percent of the proceeds from series pass sales stay with the organization that the pass is purchased from.

You can purchase passes from:

  • Los Alamos Historical Society – Visit the Los Alamos History Museum just north of Fuller Lodge (Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.).  One complimentary guided walking tour ticket will be included with the purchase of your series pass from the Los Alamos Historical Society, a value of $25.
  • J Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee – contact JJ Mortensen at jj.mortensen@gmail.com
  • Friends of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park – contact Dave Miko at 505-709-8229
  • Bradbury Science Museum Association – Visit the Gadget gift shop at the Bradbury Science Museum (Tuesday – Saturday, 10am to 4:45pm and Sunday 1pm – 4:45pm)
