During the Los Alamos County Library Board’s November meeting, Senior Librarian-Public Service Liza Rivera presented an overview of the adult summer reading program for 2024.
The Beanstalk app, used by the Library, is a web-based reading and activity tracker that helps users track their reading, participate in challenges, and earn digital badges. Beanstalk awards badges for completing a book, attending a program, and other activities. The badges can then be used to win prizes. Prizes included a Kindle, Samizdat Art bundle and Samizdat puzzler bundle.
There were 211 adult participants for 2024. The theme was Read, Renew, Repeat. Adult programs included pop art, recycled book art, after work anime, read with PRIDE, and climate ready trees.
A talk was presented by L. Poling-Kempes discussing her book “The Harvey Girls” and her other writings. Total attendance for these programs was 103.
Library Manager Gwen Kalavaza reported on findings from “The NCS Report – Los Alamos County, NM 2024”. The report states that 97% of respondents rated the library as good or excellent. This represents an increase from 2022 which was 96%.
Monday, Nov. 11, 2-3 p.m., author Tony Wasowicz will speak on his memoir “Ask Your Father: Conversations with Pop about War, Food, and Following Your Dreams”. Starting Wednesday, Nov. 13, 6:30-7:30pm, the library will host a Writers’ Group every second Wednesday of the month. This Writers’ Group is free and open to all writers, published or not, who create in any style. Attend and find a community of like-minded and supportive wordsmiths.
Friday, Nov. 15, the Library will be closed. This provides an opportunity for staff training and team building.
Saturday, Nov. 16, 3-4 p.m., Dr. Porter Swentzwell will present a discussion on the cultural and historical importance of the Tewa language.
