LARSO News:
Los Alamos County issued a formal Proclamation to the Los Alamos Retired And Senior Organization (LARSO) in celebration of Older Americans Month.
The senior center staff and volunteers were recognized for their efforts to help seniors throughout the past year. The work included serving 3,000 meals a month, grocery and prescription pick-ups, delivering library books to those homebound and more. Their finest hour was working with Nambe Pharmacy to vaccinate seniors for COVID-19.
The centers re-opened May 6 to smaller capacities, requiring masks and temperature checks and limited hours. The plans are to expand the offerings in June for both locations.
As we go to print, final word has not come down on mask and temperature checks for June.
“We really feel like there will be one more month of struggle,” LARSO Executive Director Bernadette Lauritzen said. “We really have a feeling that life will seem much more normal as we continue to work hard.”
National Senior Fitness Day takes place May 26 and the Betty Ehart Senior Center will have two offerings that day.
Natalie Smith will take the lead from 10-11 a.m. with some outdoor Zumba for anyone interested in attending the event. Participants may be unmasked outside but masks are required indoors.
New Mexico State University’s Family and Consumer Sciences Agent Desaree Jimenez will introduce the ladies to Strong Women, Strong Bones, later the same day. Only 10 participants are allowed in this class and sign ups can be done by calling 505.662.8920.
