Los Alamos Engineering Council Engineer Week Dinner

This year’s Los Alamos Engineering Council dinner will feature Prof. Cleve Moler, chief mathematician, chairman and cofounder of MathWorks, which got its start in New Mexico.

The event is Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center and includes:

  • Social Time: 5:30 p.m.;
  • Dinner: 6 p.m.; and
  • Lecture: 6:40-7:30 p.m.

Abstract: MATLAB is a high-level language and interactive environment used by millions of engineers and scientists worldwide, including many at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The University of New Mexico and Los Alamos National Laboratory played important roles in the early development of MATLAB, which started as a simple matrix calculator, and has evolved into a powerful technical computing environment. Prof. Moler will share some anecdotes about starting Mathworks and the early computers and computing environment that he used, including archival film about LANL computing back in 1976.

Speaker Biography: Cleve Moler is the original author of MATLAB and one of the founders of the MathWorks. He is currently Chairman and Chief Scientist of the company, as well as a member of the National Academy of Engineering and past president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He was a professor of mathematics and computer science for almost 20 years at the University of Michigan, Stanford University, and the University of New Mexico. Before joining MathWorks full-time in 1989, he also worked for Intel Hypercube and Ardent Computer Corporation.

Dinner Menu: Red Chili Beef Enchiladas and Green Chili Chicken Enchiladas, Pinto Beans, Spanish rice, and Salsa corn, with flour tortillas. Dessert: German chocolate cake or raspberry gelatin with peaches and cream. Chips and salsa appetizers.

Cost: $10 for society members and guests, $15 for non-members.
