LAHS News:
The Los Alamos Historical Society (LAHS) presents an exclusive behind-the-scenes talk with writer/director Thor Klein and producer Lena Vurma about their feature film, Adventures of a Mathematician, based on Stan Ulam’s autobiography of the same name.
The filmmakers spent extensive time on their research in Los Alamos and rebuilt parts of Fuller Lodge in Germany.
The community is invited to gather 1-2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27 in historic Fuller Lodge for this talk.
Adventures of a Mathematician will be released nationwide Oct. 1 by Samuel Goldwyn. Los Alamos County will host an exclusive preview premiere at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30 at the Ashley Pond Park stage.
About the film:
In this arresting account of the top-secret Manhattan Project, the brilliant Jewish-Polish mathematician Stan Ulam struggles with wartime loss and moral dilemmas at the dawn of the nuclear age. Along with his brother, Ulam escapes Poland on the eve of the Nazi invasion and eventually becomes a US citizen.
His profound mastery of mathematics makes him a prized recruit to the legendary team of European scientists at Los Alamos working to develop the atomic bomb, but the young man is conflicted about his contributions to nuclear weaponry and haunted by the fate of the family he left behind in Poland.
Director Klein weaves an honest and poignant portrait of this brilliant and ambitious man caught in a moral crisis.
