LASRC News:
Seven youth alpine ski racers traveled Jan. 18-21 to Colorado to compete in the first event of the US Ski & Snowboard (USSA) Rocky Mountain Southern Series, hosted by the Durango Winter Sports Club.
Led by the head coach Lisa Kimura and coach Kevin Mertes, Los Alamos Ski Racing Club (LASRC) showed strong presence winning many awards in Super-G (SG) and Giant Slalom (GS) races.
Awards were given for U16 men to Liam Brown (high school sophomore in Albuquerque) who placed 2nd in SG & 6th in GS, Hirotaka Mertes (freshman in Los Alamos High School) who placed 3rd in GS, Noah Bane (freshman in Los Alamos High School) who placed 4th in GS & 6th in SG, and Emmitt Tibbitts (freshman in Los Alamos High School) who placed 6th in GS & 9th in SG. For U12 boys, Micah Brown (5th grade in Albuquerque) placed 7th in SG and 7th in GS. For U12 girls, Takara Mertes (5th grade in Mountain Elementary School) placed 11th in GS, and Izel Garcia-Balkey (5th grade in Albuquerque) placed 15th in GS
LASRC will next compete Feb. 3-4 in slalom races at Arizona Snowbowl, Flagstaff, hosted by Flagstaff Ski & Snowboard Team. The USSA Rocky Mountain Southern Series Championship will be held March 23-24 at Taos Ski Valley, hosted by Taos Winter Sports Team. LASRC also will hold fun races for anyone who wants to join at Pajarito in March as part of Pine Cup and Skiesta.
