Los Alamos Sportsmen’s Club (LASC) hosted the 2014 Northern New Mexico Youth Clay Challenge Oct. 18 for athletes from Taos, Otero, Mora, Sandoval and Los Alamos counties.

Shooters from 4-H, Scholastic Clay Target Program, and Boy Scouts participated in the event, which involved a round of International BunkerTrap, a round of ATA Trap, a round of Five-Stand and an Annie Oakley. The three age groups, 12 and under, 13 through 15 and 16 through 18 drew stiff competition.

Los Alamos girls controlled the 16-19 Females with JoAnna O’Neill taking first overall, Kes Luchini taking second and Shelby Chavez taking third. Luchini and O’Neill endured tiebreakers to determine the winners in two events and Chavez won the Annie Oakley.

In the 16-18 Males, Nick Greenfield took overall first place and Josh Smith took overall third place. Tom Hanlon took fourth overall and won the Annie Oakley.

First place overall in 13-15 Females went to Andrea Simons who lead in the Five-Stand event and won the Annie Oakley.

“Our young shooters and their coaches had a great time at this event,” LASC youth programs coordinator Michael O’Neill said. “It is always nice to see the big smiles on the kids’s faces when they are breaking clays.”

The event was sponsored by the New Mexico Department of Game & Fish and the Los Alamos Sportsmen’s Club.
