The Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra will hold its fall concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7 at Crossroads Bible Church, 97 East Road, in Los Alamos.
There have been erroneous reports that the concert will be held on Saturday, but members of the orchestra emphasized today that it will be held on FRIDAY, the orchestra’s usual performance day.
Ted Vives, artistic director of the Los Alamos Community Winds will join the Symphony as conductor of this “all-American program.”
The concert will feature Symphony No.2 in B flat, Op.21 by George W. Chadwick, a member of the New England School of American composers in the late 19th century.
Chadwick, born in Lowell, Mass., studied in Germany and France before returning to the United States and establishing his career in music. He was subsequently responsible for the first significant body of concert music by a composer from the U.S.
Chadwick founded the Music Teachers National Association. He served as the music director of the Springfield Festival from 1890 until 1899; headed the Worcester Music Festival from 1899 until 1901, and was appointed director of the New England Conservatory in 1897.
He was known as an inspiring teacher. He composed in opera, chamber music, choral works, and songs—but his favorite work was orchestral music.
Also on the program is Overture to Candide by Leonard Bernstein; Themes from Victor/Victoria by Henry Mancini, arr. by Ted Vives; Paul Bunyan Suite by William Bergsma; and American Salute by Morton Gould.
