I’m Bill McKerley, and I’m a candidate for the County Council. My wife and I have been extremely fortunate to live and rear our children in this great community. I retired from the Lab after 34 years, serving as group leader and program manager. I am a US Army veteran and served in Korea during the Vietnam War era.
Since moving here in 1978, we have attended the Los Alamos Church of Christ. I have been active in youth programs through our congregation and in the community. I have been involved in Parent Teacher Organizations during our children’s school years and served as chairman of the Board of Hope Pregnancy Center. I volunteer at the jail and am the “Assistant Jail Librarian.” Currently I am the first vice chair of the Republican Party of Los Alamos County. I have been a delegate to several State Party Conventions and served on the Canvassing Committee.
I believe one of the most important roles of a councilor is to represent the will of the citizens since the County Council’s decisions often result in additional fees, taxes and restrictions. I will establish a regular “Councilor’s Corner” through the media to communicate issues, my perspectives, and pros and cons of current topics. I will also provide easy ways for citizens to convey their concerns and views to me.
The County budget should focus on ensuring that infrastructure is well maintained and contributes to the quality of life that Los Alamos is recognized for. This includes providing reliable and high quality water, utilities, waste removal, streets, recreational facilities, safety, and law enforcement.
The Council must ensure that citizens’ money is spent wisely, effectively and in a prioritized manner.
People have expressed concerns about the need for fiscal restraint. There seems to be a feeling that the County Council should hold the line on spending. The most recent issue is the proposed “rebranding” of Los Alamos County (“Live Exponentially” at a reported cost of $225,000). Another is the $11 million estimate for the golf course upgrades to be funded potentially by increased property taxes. Such expenditures need to be reconsidered or modified in line with citizen input. I do support the safety and irrigation upgrades for the course. I will never forget that it is tax-payers’ money the Council is spending.
One of government’s most important roles is to protect the rights of citizens. Based on this worldview, three of my priorities are:
- Hold the line on taxes (reducing taxes would be a great challenge)
- Reduce and simplify the processes and paperwork required for permits, zoning, etc., by at least 10 percent within two years
- Develop a prioritized list (based on citizen feedback) of large county projects with a focus on a tight operating budget.
I am grateful to the current councilors for their service. If elected, I pledge to work with the other Council members to ensure that Los Alamos County continues to provide a high quality of life. I would be honored by your support.
