ART News:

This year’s Los Alamos Artists Studio Tour is Oct. 11-12 and the Los Alamos Daily Post is featuring a “Get to Know Your Artist” series leading up to the annual event.

Each of the 16 artists participating in the tour will be showcased prior to the beginning of the tour to allow our readers an opportunity to learn about them and their work.

Meet Los Alamos srtist Stephanie Hagelberg:

I grew up in rural Minnesota where 4H gave me regular access to many crafts, including sewing, tie dyeing and batik. In public school I always participated in some kind of classroom art through middle school. We cast jewelry, threw and hand-built pottery, tied macramé projects, printed from woodcuttings, made paper mache sculptures and tooled copper relief pieces. In elementary school I remember making colored paper mosaics, toothpick sculptures, shoebox dioramas, books with illustrations of our vocabulary words and the Solar System from styrofoam balls of varying sizes. At home we often made projects out of wood using the jigsaw.

I didn’t think of myself as an artist, but looking back I see how important the process of trying and “doing art” taught me about letting go and creating something from my imagination. After college I took community education classes in hand bookbinding, paper making, tie dyeing  and knitting.

The process of creating is almost a meditation that allows me to disconnect my intellect and listen to my instincts. At this point in my life I focus on knitting, yarn dyeing and tie dyeing.
