Dr. Sherri Burr will give a talk entitled “Race and Racism in the New Millennium: The Economic Impact of Unconscious Bias,” 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, upstairs at Mesa Public Library.
Burr is the Regents Professor Emerita of UNM School of Law, and the author of several books. The talk is part of Mesa Public Library’s Authors Speak series, and is supported by the New Mexico Humanities Council. The Humanities Council describes her talk as follows:
“As the domestic and international economy evolves, so too has the discriminatory impact of unconscious bias. Burr uses studies on shopping for cars and mortgages, participating in music competitions, and searching for jobs using phantom resumes to show that while law has eliminated conscious discrimination against African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans and others, these groups continue to be harmed at a more insidious unconscious level. The surprising revelation is that group members sometimes discriminate against each other.”
The Authors Speak Series is a monthly event featuring local and regional authors speaking about their writing on a variety of subjects such as local and state history, travel, outdoor activities, fiction, Native American history and culture, poetry and more. The series is funded by the Friends of the Los Alamos County Library System. The talks are free and begin at 7 p.m., on the third Thursday of each month, followed by the opportunity to meet the authors and enjoy refreshments. Next month’s talk (March 21) will feature Bruce Noll in a Chautauqua as Walt Whitman, in celebration of Whitman’s 200th birthday.
