Los Alamos resident Micki Taylor is the winner of a $100 prize in the Los Alamos Daily Post photography contest for the 3rd quarter of 2022. Taylor is a longtime Los Alamos resident and met her husband at the Los Alamos Photo Club. Taylor took her winning photo “Mammatus Clouds” with her cell phone in July in Los Alamos.

“How can you not be into clouds,” Taylor said. “They are always there but they’re so beautiful.”

Judges’ remarks:

  • The mammatus clouds image is eye-catching because they are rare. I would have liked some
foreground to improve the composition, but it is very nice, as it is. –Ken Hanson
  • These clouds are rarely seen in the desert Southwest. I just liked it the best – punched my button, good exposure and composition. –TK Thompson
  • I found this photograph very striking … the colors are so different from what we normally see in our skies. Well done. –Don Taylor

Los Alamos residents Robert and Ann Wells established a fund in 2017 at the Los Alamos Arts Council whose purpose was to award a prize of $100 to the photographer who submits the best photograph of the quarter published as a Daily Postcard in the Los Alamos Daily Post newspaper.

‘We have been impressed by the steady development of the Los Alamos Daily Post as a comprehensive community news source and have especially enjoyed the variety of photos submitted for publication by local citizens,” Robert Wells said at the time. “The photo prize hopefully will motivate even more variety of photos and provide recognition for local photographers, which may be of particular benefit to those considering professional careers.”

The Wells asked that a panel of three photographers be chosen, one by the Wells, one by Post staff and one by the Arts Council. Photographers include Ken Hanson, Don Taylor and Martin Cooper (longtime photographer TK Thompson recently retired).

Robert Wells passed away in 2021. The Post is continuing the contest in his honor and encourages local photographers to submit their best work to caclark@ladailypost.com for consideration to win a $100 prize.
