New Mexico Counties: Living With Wildfires In The Southwest

NM Counties News:

SANTA FE — Fire season is year-round and challenging for responders and for community recovery.

Local governments, state and federal agencies, and nonprofit organizations that have a passion for fire prevention will host an in-person NM Wildland Urban Fire Summit (WUFS) Wednesday, Nov. 16 through Friday, Nov. 18, at The Lodge in Santa Fe.

The summit provides post fire onsite field trips, strategies for forest and watershed management, reducing human-caused wildfire ignitions, evacuation execution principles, post fire flooding prevention, adaptation to climate changes and land degradation, and the power of partnerships for wildfire preparedness and for cultivating resilience.

The Society of American Foresters (SAF) approved the WUFS for 10 Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) credits for attendance of the entire event.

Registration is open until the day of the summit for a $75 fee. Registration and schedule of events are available here.

The Wildland Urban Fire Summit has been New Mexico’s leading wildfire preparedness and planning event since 2010 and draws attendees from across the state and nation. The organizing committee for the event includes a mix of government agencies and nonprofit entities committed to wildfire preparedness and resilience: NM Counties, Fire Adapted NM Learning Network, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), US Department of Agriculture Forest Service (USFS), Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources (EMNRD) Forestry Division, NM State Land Office (SLO), Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), Southwest Fire Science Consortium, NM Prescribed Fire Council, NM Municipal League, and Forest Stewards Guild.
