NMSP News:

ALBUQUERQUE — New Mexico State Police (NMSP) responded to a critical incident at approximately 2:14 a.m. May 13, 2024, highlighting the dangers of impaired driving.

Officers were westbound on Interstate 40 near mile marker 155 when they encountered debris on the roadway. Their quick response led them to the discovery of a serious collision involving a 2014 white Subaru Impreza and a 2007 orange Chevrolet Corvette.

The scene revealed the Subaru on the north shoulder with significant damage to its rear, while the Corvette, also heavily damaged, was found in a northbound direction in a ravine north of the highway. The occupants of the Corvette were both outside the vehicle when officers arrived. The driver identified as Alejandro Gonzalez, 23, exhibited signs of intoxication and made an admission of responsibility for the crash, stating he was trying to get his passenger home.

Eyewitnesses accounts described the Corvette traveling at a high rate of speed without its lights on. Witnesses estimated the speed of the Corvette to be approximately 120 mph emphasizing the reckless nature of the driving behavior. The collision resulted in injuries to both occupants of the Subaru and life-threatening injuries to the Corvette’s passenger.

NMSP emphasizes the importance of responsible driving and the grave consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Gonzalez was arrested for Aggravated Driving While Under the Influence (DWI) following failed sobriety tests conducted at the scene. All occupants of both vehicles were treated by EMS at the scene. The injured passenger was transported to an area hospital, while the occupants of the Subaru sustained minor injuries.

NMSP reminds the public to report suspected impaired drivers immediately and to prioritize safety on the roads.
