Magdalena High School’s Jorianne Mirabal has been selected to the National Federation of State High School Associations’ National Student Advisory Council. The 16-member council includes students from all over the country who will represent the 8 regional sections of the NFHS.
Mirabal is one of 2 student leaders to represent Section 6, consisting of New Mexico, Arkansas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas. Mirabal will help provide a voice and student perspective on the high school experience regarding co-curricular participation within her region of the country.
She will also identify and communicate areas of support that may be needed from the NFHS and state associations, as well as developing and facilitating leadership exercises to engage peers at all levels in their growth as leaders. Beginning in July 2024, the NSCAC will also design and deliver some components of the annual National Student Leadership Summit.
“I think it’s going to be a wonderful opportunity to be able to bring back information and opportunities to the student-athletes of New Mexico,” Mirabal said. “Athletics and activities can be life-changing, and even lifesaving, for some, and being on a council like this allows me to help others.”
The first meeting of the NSAC will take place in Indianapolis, Indiana Jan. 20, 2024. The council will meet several times, virtually and in person, during Mirabal’s two-year term.
“Jorianne and her fellow council members will be representing over 12 million high school student athletes and performing arts students from over 19,500 high schools,” B. Elliot Hopkins of the NFHS said. “It is quite an honor and tremendous distinction.”
At Magdalena High School, Mirabal is student council vice-president, along with being a member of National Honors Society. The junior also participates in volleyball, basketball, track and field and rodeo.
