SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), elected officials, close friends and family of the late Sen. Carlos R. Cisneros, gathered Thursday in Questa off N.M. 522 to officially dedicate the entire length of the state road from its junction with US 64 in Taos County to the New Mexico/Colorado state line as the “Sen. Carlos R. Cisneros Memorial Highway”.

During the 2020 New Mexico Legislative Regular Session, the Senate passed Senate Memorial 45 requesting the State Transportation Commission dedicate N.M. 522 to the late state senator. The Resolution was adopted by the Commission in an open meeting Jan. 6.

The Honorable Cisneros served New Mexico and his northern community as a Taos County Commissioner and State Senator for more than three decades representing Los Alamos, Taos, Santa Fe, Mora and Rio Arriba Counties.

Cisneros was born May 13, 1948, in Questa. After graduating from Questa High School in 1968, he attended New Mexico Highlands University and the University of Montana-Missoula. Upon returning to New Mexico, Cisneros worked as a miner for the Molycorp Mine near Questa. He went on to hold many positions at the mine and for 20 years served as president of the mine employees’ union.

He was elected to serve one year on the Taos County Board of County Commissioners. He also served as a Board Trustee of the Kit Carson Electric Cooperative and a board member of Taos County Community Mental Health Services.

Cisneros was first appointed to the New Mexico Senate in July 1985. He was thereafter elected to the New Mexico Senate in 1988, and continuously served the people of Senate District 6 for 34 years until he passed away Sept. 17, 2019.
