There are more than 80,000 active warrants that have been issued out of the New Mexico Magistrate Courts.
Starting Tuesday, March 1, the State of New Mexico invites wanted persons to peacefully turn themselves in at any Magistrate Court in New Mexico. This operation is an opportunity for those individuals to clear their warrants, and resolve their cases. It will be taking place throughout the state and will continue through March 30.
This operation will afford those who have an outstanding warrant the opportunity to voluntarily surrender themselves, in a safe environment, and under favorable consideration. This is a safe way for them to resolve the warrant, without the risk of being arrested at home, in front of their family and children, or during a routine traffic stop.
Many who surrendered themselves will return home that same day. They can expect to have their cases fully resolved, or with a court date to resolve their cases in the near future. Most important, after participating they will no longer be a wanted person, and need no longer hide from law enforcement.
Operation Safe Surrender does not provide amnesty, but does enable wanted persons to work with a judge, prosecutor and public defender, and seek favorable consideration.
This operation is a result of state agencies working together to create a safer environment for everyone.
