SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is presenting its final FY24 budget request to the Legislative Finance Committee (LFC) at the state capitol.
The department is making a case for a one-time additional General Fund appropriation of $889.7 million to support road infrastructure investments.
“The funds will create jobs, strengthen our economy, and address needed investments in our roads, railways and bridges,” NMDOT Cabinet Secretary Ricky Serna said. “The additional funds will allow the department to tackle prioritized projects statewide, preserve the life of our current roadways, provide new equipment for our maintenance patrols and secure infrastructure money for local and tribal governments.”

The New Mexico Department of Transportation proposed FY24 budget is $2.12 billion which includes the nonrecurring $889.7 million request from the LFC. The total budget covers recurring operational costs, Traffic Safety, Transit and Federal Highway funds.
Highlights of NMDOT $2.12 billion FY 2024 budget include:
- $659.7 million for road infrastructure investments which includes acquisition of rights-of-way, planning, design, and construction to match other state or federal funds for projects. Appropriations made in this section may be used for identified, prioritized projects statewide;
- $545 million for the State Road Fund which supports all operational costs including salary, benefits, and other important initiatives such as remodeling district offices to become more green energy efficient;
- $142 million for road maintenance and improvement projects are necessary to preserve roadway integrity and maintaining open highway access throughout the state system;
- $130 million Transportation Project Fund which supports projects on state roads;
- $8 million for equipment to replace or upgrade faulty or deteriorating equipment;
- $28.6 million for the Local Government Road Fund provides funding to local governments and tribes for their road project priorities;
- $6 million for State Aviation Fund to improve the physical condition of the airport facilities;
- $1.9 million for Traffic Safety Programs to support core safety programs like occupant protection, motorcycle safety, anti-drunk, drugged, and distracted driving.
